The Roane State Raiders volleyball team earned another home victory tonight, this time over conference foe Cleveland St. by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19).
The Raiders dropped the first set but came back to win the next three sets in close fashion.
As good as the Raiders played, the Lady Cougars were determined to not make it easy for the home team. Roane State head coach Steve Dallman said, “I think – number one – Cleveland St. is the best Cleveland St. team I’ve seen since I’ve been here. They’re very good on defense.”
Dallman added, “We had a new lineup in, so the first game was a little shaky. We came back in the next three and I think with the changes we made, the more reps they get, the better they will get in the long run is going to help us.”
Whitney Thompson led the Raiders with 16 kills. Madison McWhorter added ten. Kelsey Courtney and Skylar Jenkins each had 19 assists and Keely Stilwill led the team with 16 digs.
The win improved the Raiders to 3-2 in conference play and 7-7 overall.
The team travels to Bryan College on Wednesday for a non-conference match before heading to Chattanooga to face conference rival Chattanooga St. on Friday in a critical match that, if the Raiders win, could once again create a three-way tie for the conference lead.
According to Dallman, “We basically have to win out… It’s going to be a dog fight and, to be honest, anyone can win the Region this year.”
