After the first day of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship, Iredia Goodness claims National Runner-Up in the long jump while Jason Bowers, Praise Idamadudu, and Joel Forbes secure All-American status and advance to the finals tomorrow.
Today started with Jason Bowers setting the pace in the mile run with the fastest qualifying time at 4:08.33. The time was five seconds faster than the second-best, pushing Bowers to tomorrow’s finals as the favorite to win the National Championship and securing All-American honors in the event.
Praise Idamadudu continues to shine when the bright lights are on, adding two more All-Americans to her name for a total of six now. Idamadudu qualified for the finals in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash. In the 60m, she posted the second-fastest qualifying time at 7.37, two hundredths of a second behind first. The time sets a new school record in the event as well as a personal best for her. She also added the second fastest qualifying time in the 200 at 24.01. She will be eyeing adding her second and third career National Title tomorrow in the finals.
Joel Forbes earned All-American honors in the 600m after posting the sixth-best qualifying time in the 600m at 1:19.94. He will have an opportunity for a national title as well in the event.
Iredia Goodness had the final event of the day in the long jump, but did not disappoint, popping a jump of 7.40m to finish in second place as an All-American and National Runner-Up. He will take on the triple jump tomorrow alongside teammate Jaylen Poole for an opportunity to add more hardware.
Doris Mensah took on the 60m hurdles finishing in 45th with a time of 9.88 missing out on the finals. Alana Mack finished in 15th in the 60m posting a time of 7.61. The Top 8 moved on to tomorrow’s finals.
Tobi Oniyide came in 15th place in the men’s 60m dash with a time of 6.83. Logan Istre finished in 22nd in the men’s 200m dash with a time of 22.11. Both missed out on the finals as the Top 8 advanced on.
After day one, Cumerland's men are tied for 12th place with eight points. Doane University is in first with 21 points. The women are yet to crack the leaderboard, but that is coming with Top 8 finishes from Idamadudu tomorrow as well as an opportunity for Daveina Watson to chip in some points in the shot put.
The final day of the NAIA National Championship will host several of the finals events as well as some more field events the Phoenix will be participating in.
